Bill Meece made a plea deal which included him giving details about how he committed the murders. Meg Wellnitz also pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison with parole. In 2005, Bill Meece withdrew his plea, citing conflict with his attorneys, and took his case to trial. She told investigators Meece had carried out the killings for Meg so she could collect the six-figure life insurance payout. Regina also said she knew where the missing white fire safe was. Meg Wellnitz and Bill Meece were arrested, and in late 2004, pleaded guilty to the murders. Meg Wellnitz was sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least 25 years. Bill Meece withdrew his plea in 2005, citing conflict with his attorneys, and took his case to trial.
