Friends told detectives they needed to look at Jeff's ex-girlfriend Heather Mizer. When police went looking for her, they discovered that Heather and her new boyfriend Shawn Wilhelm had disappeared the day after the murder. Searching for the couple, police went to Shawn's mother Sandy's house. Sandy admitted that her son and Heather had recently visited her. They were with Shawn's cousin Justin Clapp, as well as friends Joseph Walton and Brett Matthews. Sandy also provided police with some notes Shawn had written - all talking about how he wanted Jeff dead.
