As police dug into this unbelievable true crime case, they discovered a whole range of suspects but none with the motive and opportunity to commit the twisted murders. Even when the case went cold, they refused to give up on this real life murder mystery. After a decade of working on the disturbing true crime story, police finally got the break they needed when a witness came forward with a tip. Through a series of full police interviews, investigators solve the murder case, revealing a story of fatal attraction and discovered an unexpected killer. However, when the case went to trial, the story changed, raising the question of if this was a psychopath trying a new manipulation or if they were looking at a wrongful conviction. All the twists and turns of the case made this one of the most interesting and challenging true crime cases investigators and prosecutors in the area had ever encountered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On February 27, 1993, veterinarian Joseph Wellnitz, his wife, Beth, and their 20-year-old son Dennis were found shot to death in the family's Columbia, Kentucky home. Evidence at the scene suggested it was a targeted hit. The only item missing from the home was a small white fire safe. Investigators looked at multiple suspects, including Joseph and Beth's daughter Meg Wellnitz and her then boyfriend Bill Meece, but the case went cold. Ten years after the triple homicide, police got an explosive new tip from Bill Meece’s estranged wife, Regina Meade. She told investigators Meece had carried out the killings for Meg so she could collect the six-figure life insurance payout. Regina also said she knew where the missing white fire safe was. Meg Wellnitz and Bill Meece were arrested, and in late 2004, pleaded guilty to the murders. Meg Wellnitz was sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least 25 years. Bill Meece withdrew his plea in 2005, citing conflict with his attorneys, and took his case to trial.
