Lawrence 'Larry' Rudolph (Larry)

Lawrence Rudolph was born in the United States and built a successful career as a dentist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Over several decades he established a prosperous dental practice and became well known among hunting enthusiasts for his participation in international big-game safaris.

Rudolph married Bianca Rudolph, who was originally from South Africa, and the couple remained married for more than 30 years. Together they travelled extensively, particularly on hunting expeditions throughout Africa. Behind the public appearance of a successful marriage, prosecutors later established that Rudolph had maintained a long-term extramarital relationship while continuing to present himself publicly as a devoted husband.

On 11 October 2016, Lawrence and Bianca Rudolph were staying at Kafue National Park in Zambia during an annual hunting safari. According to Rudolph's initial account, Bianca was packing a Browning shotgun inside their hunting cabin when the firearm accidentally discharged, fatally striking her in the chest.

Local authorities initially accepted Rudolph's explanation, and Bianca's death was treated as an accidental shooting. Her body was returned to the United States and cremated shortly afterwards.

Questions surrounding the death emerged after several individuals, including Rudolph's long-time girlfriend, later disclosed information suggesting the shooting had been intentional. Federal investigators reopened the case, ultimately concluding that Rudolph had deliberately shot Bianca before falsely portraying the killing as an accident.

Prosecutors argued that Rudolph exploited the isolated setting of an overseas hunting safari to stage Bianca's death as an accidental firearm discharge.

Evidence presented at trial showed that Rudolph was highly experienced with firearms and hunting safety, making the alleged accidental shooting inconsistent with his knowledge and experience. Investigators also challenged his account of how the shotgun discharged while Bianca was preparing hunting equipment.

Following Bianca's death, Rudolph quickly arranged for her cremation and later collected approximately US$4.8 million in life insurance benefits. Prosecutors argued that financial gain and his desire to continue a long-term relationship with another woman were the principal motives for the murder.

The investigation gained momentum after Rudolph's long-time girlfriend informed authorities that Rudolph had admitted killing Bianca and described himself as having "gotten away with it."

The FBI and federal prosecutors conducted a lengthy investigation involving evidence from the United States and Zambia. Investigators examined ballistic evidence, insurance records, travel history, financial documents and witness testimony, concluding that Rudolph's account of an accidental shooting was inconsistent with the available evidence.

A federal grand jury indicted Rudolph in 2021 on charges of foreign murder of a United States national and mail fraud relating to the insurance proceeds. He was arrested and held pending trial.

Rudolph was tried in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado during 2022. Prosecutors argued that he intentionally murdered Bianca in Zambia to obtain millions of dollars in insurance proceeds and free himself to continue his relationship with another woman.

The jury heard testimony from hunting experts, forensic specialists, investigators and Rudolph's former girlfriend. Prosecutors also presented evidence concerning the substantial insurance payout and Rudolph's conduct following Bianca's death.

Rudolph maintained that Bianca's death had been a tragic hunting accident and denied intentionally shooting her. His defence argued that the prosecution's case relied heavily on circumstantial evidence and disputed witness testimony.

In August 2022, the jury found Rudolph guilty of foreign murder and mail fraud. In 2023, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for Bianca's murder, together with a consecutive term of imprisonment for the mail fraud conviction.

The prosecution was unusual because the murder occurred overseas but involved an American citizen, allowing federal authorities to prosecute Rudolph under legislation covering the murder of United States nationals outside the country. The case required extensive cooperation between American investigators and Zambian authorities.

A significant aspect of the prosecution centred on Rudolph's long-term affair with Lori Milliron, who had worked as the manager of his dental practice. Prosecutors argued that Rudolph wanted to begin a new life with Milliron while also benefiting financially from Bianca's death. Milliron was later separately convicted of perjury for lying to a federal grand jury during the investigation.

The case attracted widespread international attention because Bianca's death had originally been accepted as an accident during a luxury hunting safari. Federal prosecutors described the investigation as an example of how witness testimony, financial evidence and forensic review can overturn an initial accidental death finding years later.
