The Case of Bianca Rudolph

Bianca Rudolph, 56, was fatally shot during a hunting safari in Zambia on 11 October 2016. Her husband, wealthy dentist Lawrence "Larry" Rudolph, claimed the shooting was an accident while she packed a shotgun. Years later, FBI investigators proved the death was murder motivated by insurance money and Rudolph's long-term affair. He was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Bianca Rudolph was an experienced hunter who frequently travelled to Africa with her husband, Lawrence Rudolph. The couple had been married for more than 30 years and regularly participated in big-game hunting safaris. In October 2016, they travelled to Zambia for what was intended to be another hunting expedition. On the final morning of the trip, Bianca was preparing firearms for the journey home while Lawrence was nearby. Lawrence later claimed he heard a gunshot and found Bianca with a fatal wound to her chest. Zambian authorities initially accepted his account that the shotgun had accidentally discharged while she was packing it for travel. Bianca was cremated in Zambia shortly after her death.

Bianca was found inside the couple's safari cabin in Zambia with a single shotgun wound through her chest and heart. Lawrence told investigators the firearm discharged accidentally while Bianca was placing it into a soft gun case. The death was initially ruled an accident by local authorities. Years later, FBI investigators and forensic experts concluded the physical evidence was inconsistent with an accidental discharge and instead supported that Bianca had been intentionally shot from several feet away.

Although Zambian authorities initially ruled Bianca's death accidental, the circumstances attracted the attention of the FBI after concerns were raised about Lawrence Rudolph's financial motives and his long-term affair with Lori Milliron, his office manager. Investigators discovered Lawrence had collected approximately US$4.88 million from multiple life insurance policies following Bianca's death. They also uncovered evidence that Lawrence had maintained a years-long relationship with Milliron before Bianca was killed. Witnesses testified that Lawrence later admitted, during an argument with Milliron, that he had killed his wife for her. The FBI conducted an extensive international investigation before charging Rudolph with foreign murder and mail fraud in 2021.

On 1 August 2022, a federal jury convicted Lawrence Rudolph of murdering Bianca Rudolph and committing mail fraud by fraudulently collecting millions of dollars in life insurance proceeds. On 21 August 2023, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for Bianca's murder and a concurrent 20-year sentence for mail fraud. He was also ordered to pay nearly US$4.88 million in restitution and a US$2 million fine.

The prosecution described Bianca's murder as a carefully planned killing motivated by financial gain and Lawrence Rudolph's desire to continue his relationship with longtime mistress Lori Milliron. The case demonstrated how advances in forensic investigation and persistent international cooperation can overturn an initial accidental-death ruling years later.
