Zachary Hughes

Zachary David Hughes is an American convicted murderer and former concert pianist who was sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 murder of Christina Parcell in Greer, South Carolina. On October 13, 2021, Parcell, 41, was found stabbed to death inside her home on Canebrake Drive. She had suffered more than 30 stab wounds. Rose petals were scattered around the crime scene, a detail that later led to the case being referred to as the "Rose Petal Murder." Hughes initially maintained his innocence, but investigators developed evidence connecting him to the crime. Surveillance footage showed a person entering Parcell's home and later leaving on a bicycle. Investigators also linked Hughes' truck and bicycle to the movements captured around the time of the murder. Prosecutors further presented evidence that Hughes' DNA was found beneath Parcell's fingernails. A significant part of the investigation concerned Hughes' friendship with John Mello, the father of Parcell's daughter. Mello and Parcell were involved in a contentious custody dispute, and investigators discovered thousands of messages between Mello and Hughes. Prosecutors alleged that Hughes had participated in harassment directed at Parcell before her death. At trial in February 2025, Hughes admitted that he had stabbed Parcell but argued that he had acted because he believed her daughter was being sexually abused. The judge had barred the defense from presenting those allegations as a justification for the killing. The jury rejected Hughes' account and convicted him of murder and several other offenses. He was sentenced to life in prison. Hughes filed a notice of appeal shortly after his conviction.

Early Life

Zachary David Hughes was a highly accomplished classical pianist before the murder of Christina Parcell.

He attended the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied piano under renowned pianist Jerome Lowenthal. Hughes graduated from Juilliard in 2015 and subsequently pursued a career as a professional concert pianist.

He served as resident pianist with the Knoxville Symphony during the 2017–2018 season and performed classical repertoire professionally. At the time of his arrest in 2021, investigators said he had no prior criminal record.

Hughes met John Mello through a chance encounter and the two eventually became friends. Mello was the father of Christina Parcell's young daughter and was involved in a contentious custody dispute with Parcell.

According to evidence later presented in court, Hughes and Mello exchanged almost 2,000 WhatsApp messages in the period leading up to Parcell's murder. Investigators also alleged that Mello asked Hughes to harass Parcell.

Killing Spree

Zachary Hughes murdered one known victim, Christina Parcell.

On October 13, 2021, Hughes went to Parcell's home on Canebrake Drive in Greer, a community near Greenville, South Carolina.

Parcell was inside the house when Hughes entered. Investigators later obtained surveillance footage showing a man entering the residence and leaving on a bicycle.

Parcell was discovered dead inside the home. She had been stabbed more than 30 times, including wounds to major blood vessels in her neck. Rose petals had been scattered around the body.

Investigators developed a timeline using neighborhood surveillance and license-plate recognition cameras. Hughes' truck was captured with a bicycle in the back, and the same bicycle was subsequently located at Hughes' residence. Investigators also identified Hughes' DNA beneath Parcell's fingernails.

Hughes was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Although he initially maintained his innocence, Hughes eventually admitted during his 2025 trial that he had stabbed Parcell to death.

His explanation was that he believed Parcell and her fiancé were sexually abusing her daughter and that he had killed Parcell because he believed he needed to protect the child. The court did not permit those allegations to be used as a legal justification for the killing.

Modus Operandi

Hughes carried out a targeted stabbing inside Christina Parcell's home.

He entered the residence and attacked Parcell with a knife, inflicting more than 30 wounds. The attack was sufficiently extensive to cause fatal injuries to major blood vessels.

Rose petals were scattered around the crime scene, an unusual detail that became one of the defining features of the investigation and led to widespread media references to the "Rose Petal Murder."

Evidence presented at trial indicated that Hughes had previously been in communication with John Mello about Parcell. Prosecutors alleged that the relationship between Hughes and Mello formed part of the circumstances leading to the killing.

Capture

Hughes turned himself in to authorities on October 13, 2021, the same day Parcell was killed. He was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Investigators continued building the case through surveillance footage, license-plate recognition, digital communications and forensic evidence.

A court filing in 2022 revealed that investigators were seeking access to Hughes' iPhone as they investigated his communications with Mello and the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Hughes remained in custody awaiting trial for more than three years.

Trial & Sentence

Hughes' trial began in February 2025 after an earlier trial date was delayed because of difficulties assembling a qualified jury.

The prosecution presented evidence concerning Hughes' movements, his relationship with John Mello, digital communications, surveillance footage and forensic evidence.

Hughes testified in his own defense and admitted that he had killed Parcell. He claimed, however, that he had acted because he believed Parcell's daughter was in danger of sexual abuse.

The judge had previously ruled that the jury could not hear the underlying allegations concerning Parcell and her fiancé as a justification for the murder. Hughes nevertheless repeatedly attempted to explain his actions through his claimed concerns for the child.

On February 20, 2025, after approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury found Hughes guilty of murder. He was also convicted of possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime, burglary and harassment-related offenses.

Judge Patrick Fant sentenced Hughes to life imprisonment.

During Hughes' testimony, he also alleged that John Mello had previously offered him money to kill Parcell. Hughes said Mello first offered $5,000 and later $10,000, although Hughes claimed he refused the offers. Following Hughes' testimony, authorities arrested Mello and charged him with accessory before the fact to a felony and solicitation to commit a felony.

Hughes' attorneys subsequently filed a notice of appeal.
