Brian Laundrie

Brian Christopher Laundrie was an American man who became the central figure in the disappearance and death of his fiancée, Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito, in 2021. Their cross-country road trip attracted international attention after Petito disappeared and Laundrie returned to Florida without her. The couple had been travelling across the western United States in a van, documenting their journey on social media. In August 2021, police in Moab, Utah, responded to a reported domestic dispute involving the couple. Weeks later, Petito stopped communicating with her family, while Laundrie returned to Florida alone. Petito's remains were discovered on September 19, 2021, in the Spread Creek area of Wyoming. The Teton County coroner determined that she had died from blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation. The FBI's investigation identified Laundrie as the person responsible for her death. Laundrie disappeared shortly after returning to Florida and became the subject of a nationwide search. His remains were found in October 2021 in a nature reserve near his parents' home. Investigators recovered a notebook containing written statements in which he claimed responsibility for Petito's death. Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before he could be prosecuted for her killing. His death ended the criminal investigation without a trial, but the FBI concluded that he was responsible for Petito's death.

Early Life

Brian Christopher Laundrie was born on November 18, 1997, in the United States. He grew up in New York before his family later settled in North Port, Florida.

Laundrie attended school in New York and Florida. He met Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito as a teenager, and the two eventually began a relationship.

The couple became engaged in 2020 and developed an interest in travelling together. They planned a cross-country road trip in a converted van, intending to visit national parks and document their experiences online.

Their journey became part of Petito's ambitions to establish herself as a travel and lifestyle content creator.

Killing Spree

Brian Laundrie was responsible for the death of one known victim, his fiancée, Gabby Petito.

In the summer of 2021, the couple began travelling across the United States in a white Ford Transit van. They visited several national parks and shared photographs and videos of their journey.

On August 12, 2021, police in Moab, Utah, responded to a reported altercation involving the couple. Officers interviewed them separately and arranged for them to spend the night apart. No arrest was made during that incident.

By late August, Petito's communications with her family stopped. Laundrie subsequently travelled back to Florida in the van without her.

On September 11, Petito's family reported her missing. Her remains were discovered eight days later in Wyoming.

The investigation established that Petito had been killed during the couple's trip. The FBI later confirmed that Laundrie had claimed responsibility for her death in a notebook recovered near his remains.

Modus Operandi

The investigation into Petito's death focused on the couple's relationship, their movements during the road trip and Laundrie's conduct after her disappearance.

After returning to Florida without Petito, Laundrie used her debit card without authorisation. Investigators also identified text messages sent between their phones after her death that appeared intended to create the impression that she was still alive.

Laundrie's return home, subsequent disappearance and written statements in his notebook became important elements of the investigation.

Because Laundrie died before a criminal trial, there was no courtroom examination of the full circumstances of Petito's killing.

Capture

Laundrie returned to Florida in late August 2021 and stayed at his parents' home in North Port. He did not publicly explain what had happened to Petito, and her family continued trying to contact her.

After Petito was reported missing, investigators searched the couple's van and examined evidence relating to their journey.

On September 15, Laundrie's vehicle was found at the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. His parents reported him missing two days later, prompting an extensive search of the area.

On September 22, a federal arrest warrant was issued for Laundrie over the alleged unauthorised use of Petito's debit card following her death. The warrant concerned the financial offence, rather than a murder charge.

On October 20, investigators located human remains in the reserve after floodwaters receded. The remains were identified as Laundrie's. A backpack, notebook and revolver were also recovered nearby.

The notebook contained statements in which Laundrie claimed responsibility for Petito's death. The medical examiner determined that Laundrie had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Trial & Sentence

Brian Laundrie never stood trial for Gabby Petito's death and was never sentenced for her killing.

The FBI completed its investigation in January 2022. Investigators concluded that Laundrie was the only person directly involved in Petito's death and confirmed that his notebook contained statements claiming responsibility.

The investigation also found evidence that Laundrie had used Petito's debit card without authorisation after her death and had sent messages intended to mislead others about whether she was still alive.

Because Laundrie died before criminal proceedings could take place, there was no jury verdict or formal criminal conviction for murder.

His death brought the criminal investigation to a close, although questions about the events surrounding Petito's final days and the handling of the case continued to receive public attention.
