Adrian Ernest Bayley became one of Australia’s most notorious violent offenders after abducting, raping and murdering Jill Meagher in Melbourne in 2012. The murder shocked Australia because Meagher disappeared while walking home through Brunswick after a night out with friends, sparking enormous public fear and grief across Victoria. Bayley’s extensive violent criminal history later generated intense outrage after it emerged he had previously committed multiple sexual and violent offenses before being released on parole. The case became a defining moment in Australian discussions surrounding parole laws, repeat sex offenders and women’s safety, while Jill Meagher’s death triggered massive public vigils and nationwide mourning.

Albert Henry DeSalvo is best known for confessing to the infamous Boston Strangler murders, in which 13 women were killed in the Boston, Massachusetts, area between 1962 and 1964. Although he was never tried for those murders, modern DNA testing later linked him to the final victim, strengthening the case against him. DeSalvo was imprisoned for unrelated crimes and was murdered in prison in 1973.

Allan Joseph Legere, known as the "Monster of the Miramichi," was a Canadian serial killer, rapist and arsonist who murdered five people in New Brunswick between 1986 and 1989. Already serving a life sentence for the 1986 murder of shopkeeper John Glendenning, Legere escaped from a hospital in May 1989 and spent seven months terrorising the Miramichi region, murdering Annie Flam, sisters Donna and Linda Daughney, and Catholic priest James Smith. He was captured in November 1989 following a massive manhunt and convicted of the four murders in 1991, with DNA evidence playing a major role in the prosecution. Legere remained imprisoned for the rest of his life and died at Edmonton Institution in March 2026.

Angharad Williamson became one of the United Kingdom's most reviled child killers after murdering her two young sons, John Paul Bennett and Jake Bennett, alongside her partner, Jamie Barrow, in South Wales in 2020. The boys endured prolonged abuse before being killed inside their family home. Following a high-profile trial, Williamson and Barrow were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with the case prompting renewed calls for stronger child protection measures.

Ashley Britt McArthur murdered her friend, 33-year-old private investigator Taylor Wright, near Pensacola, Florida, in September 2017 after Wright sought the return of $34,000 she had entrusted to her for safekeeping. Prosecutors established that McArthur had already spent much of the money before taking Wright to her family's rural property in Cantonment, where she shot her and concealed her remains beneath concrete and potting soil. Cell-phone records, financial evidence and surveillance footage helped investigators reconstruct McArthur's movements. She was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in August 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a mandatory minimum of 25 years.

Bradley Murdoch became one of Australia’s most infamous killers after murdering British backpacker Peter Falconio in the Northern Territory Outback in 2001. The case shocked Australia and the United Kingdom due to the remote desert setting, the disappearance of Falconio’s body and the terrifying survival story of Falconio’s girlfriend, Joanne Lees. Murdoch was portrayed as a violent drug-running truck driver with links to criminal networks across remote Australia. His conviction became one of the country’s most high-profile murder cases, inspiring documentaries, books and films while generating decades of speculation about what truly happened in the Outback. Murdoch maintained his innocence until his death from throat cancer in 2025, never revealing the location of Falconio’s remains.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant became internationally known after carrying out the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15, 2019. He attacked worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 people and injuring 40 others before being arrested by police. Tarrant later pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one terrorism charge. In 2020, he became the first person in New Zealand to receive a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Michael Brett Kelly became known in Georgia criminal cases after being convicted in the 2012 home invasion murder of Gale Spencer in Macon, Georgia. Prosecutors alleged Kelly was one of four offenders involved in the violent robbery that ended with Spencer’s death inside the residence. The case generated strong local media attention because multiple offenders participated in the fatal home invasion. Authorities later secured convictions against Kelly and the co-defendants following the investigation into Spencer’s killing. Kelly ultimately received a life sentence for his role in the homicide.
