They conducted a series of full police interviews, honing in on a suspect, who confessed and was convicted for the murder. Years later, the case turned out to be an even more twisted true crime story when The Innocence Project proved there was a false confession and a wrongful conviction. The man who was convicted was exonerated and police were back at square one. They reopened the disturbing true crime case, using genetic genealogy to try to hone in on a new suspect. Through a series of full police interrogations, they discovered an unexpected killer - and psychopath hiding in plain sight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On June 13, 1996, Angie Dodge was found stabbed to death in her Idaho Falls apartment. Police launched a homicide investigation, soon learning that the 18-year-old had been assaulted before her death. Investigators zeroed in on suspect Chris Tapp, who was convicted of aiding and abetting Dodge's rape and murder and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison. Tapp recanted his confession, and in 2019 he was exonerated and declared an innocent man. Investigators re-opened the case and tested DNA from the crime scene against genetic genealogy databases to try to find someone related to the person that left the DNA.
