He had been living at his mother Deborah Rudibaugh's home. At first, Rudibaugh claimed her son had gone on a trip. His friends continued pressuring the family and police until Rudibaugh finally filed a missing person's report in August 2015. As police searched for Jake, his sister Stephaine Jackson and brother-in-law David Jackson began selling off his possessions. Investigators soon learned that the Jacksons had regularly fought with Jake over who would inherit their mother's ranch. Police obtained a search warrant for the property, discovering Jake's body by a corral. Rudibaugh - who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer - immediately confessed, claiming she shot her son in the house then moved his body outside on her own. Detectives didn't believe the petite woman could have moved the body alone - especially as she'd just had surgery days before her son's disappearance. Police were convinced that the Jacksons were involved in the murder, but they both denied it.
