The Case of Christina Parcell

Christina Parcell, 41, was a veterinary technician and mother living in Greer, South Carolina. On October 13, 2021, she was found dead inside her home on Canebrake Drive after being stabbed more than 30 times. Investigators initially had no obvious connection between Christina and Zachary Hughes, but surveillance footage and digital evidence eventually linked Hughes to the killing. Hughes admitted during his 2025 trial that he had stabbed Christina, but claimed he believed he was acting to protect her daughter. A jury rejected his defence and convicted him of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Overview / Background
Christina Parcell was 41 years old and worked as a veterinary technician at Foothills Veterinary Hospital. She was a mother and lived in the Canebrake community near Greer in Greenville County. Christina shared a young daughter with John Mello, her former partner. The two had been involved in a lengthy and contentious custody dispute over their daughter. In the months before Christina's death, the custody dispute became increasingly complicated. Christina was also engaged to Bradly Post. There was no apparent personal relationship between Christina and Zachary Hughes. Investigators later established that Hughes had become connected to Christina through his friendship with Mello. The investigation would ultimately reveal that Hughes had been communicating with Mello and had become involved in matters surrounding Christina and the custody dispute before her death.
Crime Scene
On the morning of October 13, 2021, Christina was at her home on Canebrake Drive. Bradly Post became concerned when Christina did not respond to his attempts to contact her. He went to the home and entered through an unlocked back door. Inside, he found Christina lying dead in the living room. A trail of rose petals led into the room where her body was discovered, giving the case its later nickname, the "Rose Petal Murder." Christina had suffered more than 30 stab wounds. Investigators determined that she had been attacked inside her home. The severity of the injuries and the circumstances at the scene established that Christina had been deliberately murdered.
Investigation
Greenville County Sheriff's Office detectives began investigating Christina's murder and initially had no obvious connection between her and Hughes. Surveillance footage from neighbouring properties eventually helped investigators establish a timeline of events surrounding the killing. Investigators identified Hughes as a suspect and determined that he had travelled to Christina's neighbourhood on the morning of October 13. A Ring doorbell camera captured a man entering Christina's home and later leaving on a bicycle. Investigators subsequently connected the bicycle to Hughes. Further investigation uncovered communications between Hughes and John Mello. Court documents showed that Hughes and Mello had exchanged a large number of messages and that Hughes had become involved in harassment directed at Christina in the months before her death. Hughes was arrested in November 2021 and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. During his 2025 trial, Hughes admitted that he had stabbed Christina. His defence argued that he believed Christina's young daughter was being sexually abused and that he had killed Christina because he believed doing so was necessary to protect the child. The judge did not allow the defence to present allegations of abuse as justification for the killing because the evidence did not establish that the child was in imminent danger at the time. The prosecution argued that Hughes had deliberately entered Christina's home and murdered her as part of the circumstances surrounding Mello's dispute with Christina. The trial also brought renewed attention to the communications between Hughes and Mello. Following Hughes's testimony, Mello was arrested and charged with offences relating to the alleged solicitation and planning of the attack. Those proceedings are separate from Hughes's conviction.
Outcome
Zachary Hughes was tried for Christina's murder in Greenville County Circuit Court in February 2025. After approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury found Hughes guilty of murder. He was also convicted of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, first-degree burglary, second-degree harassment and second-degree conspiracy to commit harassment. On February 20, 2025, Judge Patrick Fant sentenced Hughes to life imprisonment for Christina's murder. Hughes's defence subsequently filed an appeal challenging aspects of the trial. His murder conviction and life sentence remain in place.
Notes
Christina's murder became known as the "Rose Petal Murder" because investigators found rose petals scattered around her body. The case was also notable because Hughes and Christina had apparently never met before the attack, with investigators instead uncovering the connection through Hughes's friendship and communications with Christina's former partner. The murder investigation ultimately exposed a wider network of relationships and disputes surrounding Christina's custody battle and the harassment she had experienced before her death.
