Melody Farris

Melody Walker Farris was 64 years old when she was convicted of murdering her husband in 2024. She was married to Gary Farris for 38 years, and the couple had four children: Chris, Scott, Emily and Amanda.

Gary was a prominent Atlanta-area commercial real estate attorney and the founder of the Atlanta office of law firm Burr & Forman. The family lived on a large 10-acre property in Alpharetta, Cherokee County, Georgia.

Despite their long marriage, witnesses later described a deeply troubled relationship. Prosecutors presented evidence that Melody and Gary lived largely separate lives and that Melody had several extramarital relationships.

One of those relationships was with Roy "Rusty" Barton, a man who lived in Tennessee. Prosecutors argued that Melody wanted to leave Gary and begin a new life with Barton.

Melody's only confirmed murder was the killing of her husband, Gary Farris.

Gary was last seen alive on July 3, 2018. According to the prosecution's theory, Melody shot him inside their home following an argument.

Investigators later discovered small amounts of Gary's blood inside the house, including in the basement. His cellphone was subsequently tracked moving between the house and the burn-pile area, which prosecutors argued occurred after his body had been taken outside.

On July 5, Gary's remains were discovered on a burn pile approximately 100 yards from the house. The remains were extensively burned, making identification difficult.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation eventually determined that the remains belonged to Gary and found a bullet lodged in his rib cage. Another spent bullet was recovered inside the home.

Prosecutors alleged that Melody shot Gary inside their home before moving his body to a burn pile on the property.

The body was extensively burned in an apparent attempt to destroy the remains and conceal the killing. Investigators also found evidence inside the home that prosecutors used to establish that Gary had been shot there.

The murder weapon was never recovered. A forensic pathologist testified that the bullet found in Gary's rib cage could not by itself establish that the gunshot caused his death, leaving some aspects of the precise manner of death unresolved.

Nevertheless, prosecutors argued that the physical evidence, phone data, financial circumstances and Melody's relationships established that she was responsible for the killing.

Gary's remains were discovered by his son, Scott Farris, on July 5, 2018.

The investigation initially faced uncertainty because of the condition of the remains and the circumstances surrounding Gary's disappearance. Investigators eventually established his identity and found evidence indicating that he had been the victim of a homicide.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation assisted with DNA testing, ballistic evidence, arson analysis and the autopsy.

Melody became the focus of the investigation as detectives examined her relationship with Gary, her extramarital affairs and her movements following his disappearance.

In June 2019, almost a year after Gary's death, Melody was arrested and charged with his murder.

Melody's trial began in Cherokee County Superior Court in October 2024 and lasted approximately three weeks.

Prosecutors argued that Melody had the strongest motive to kill Gary because of her troubled marriage, her relationship with Barton and the financial benefits she could potentially receive after Gary's death. They presented evidence of her extramarital relationships and a text message in which she had expressed a desire for Gary to die.

The defence maintained that Melody was innocent and attempted to place responsibility on her son, Scott. Her lawyers questioned how Melody, who was considerably smaller than Gary, could have moved his approximately 300-pound body from the house to the burn pile. They also highlighted the absence of a recovered murder weapon and unresolved questions surrounding the precise cause of death.

The jury rejected the defence and on November 4, 2024, found Melody guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, concealing the death of another and making a false statement.

On December 5, 2024, she was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years, plus five years for concealing the death and five years for making false statements. The additional sentences run concurrently.

The prosecution's theory of motive centred on money, sex and the prospect of a new life. Prosecutors argued that Melody wanted Gary out of her life so she could pursue her relationship with Rusty Barton and potentially benefit from Gary's wealth. Barton testified that he and Melody had discussed marrying after Gary was "out of the picture."

The prosecution also presented a message Melody sent to a friend in which she wrote that she hoped Gary would "die alone and a gruesome death." Prosecutors argued that the statement demonstrated hostility toward her husband and supported their claim that the killing was intentional.

Melody did not testify during her murder trial. However, she made a dramatic statement at her December 2024 sentencing, continuing to deny responsibility and accusing her son Scott of killing his father. She claimed that she had seen Scott near the burn pile and maintained that he was the real killer. The judge stopped her from discussing evidence from the trial during sentencing.

Scott Farris denied killing his father and reacted angrily to his mother's accusation. He had been the person who discovered Gary's remains and initially alerted authorities.

The case was later featured on 48 Hours in an episode titled The Farris Wheel, which examined the marriage, the investigation, the competing accusations within the family and Melody's conviction.
