The Case of Harmony Montgomery

Five-year-old Harmony Montgomery disappeared in December 2019 while living with her father, Adam Montgomery, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Her disappearance went unreported for more than two years. In 2024, Adam Montgomery was convicted of murdering Harmony, abusing her corpse and falsifying physical evidence, despite her body never being recovered.

Harmony Montgomery was born on 7 June 2014. After spending much of her early life in foster care, she was placed in the custody of her biological father, Adam Montgomery, in early 2019. Harmony was last seen alive in December 2019 at the family's Manchester home. Prosecutors alleged that Adam Montgomery fatally assaulted his daughter after becoming angry when she had a bathroom accident while travelling in the family vehicle. Rather than reporting her death, Montgomery concealed Harmony's body and continued moving it between various locations for months before ultimately disposing of her remains. Her body has never been found. Harmony's disappearance remained hidden until late 2021, when concerns raised by child welfare authorities prompted a missing person investigation.

Investigators determined Harmony was killed inside or near the family's vehicle before her body was transported back to the family's Manchester residence. Over the following months, Adam Montgomery allegedly concealed Harmony's remains in several locations, including a stroller, a refrigerator and a ceiling vent before permanently disposing of her body. Despite extensive searches, investigators have never recovered Harmony's remains.

Harmony was officially reported missing in December 2021, more than two years after she was last seen. Manchester Police, New Hampshire authorities and the FBI launched a major investigation involving interviews, forensic examinations, digital evidence and witness testimony. Prosecutors relied heavily on testimony from Adam Montgomery's estranged wife, Kayla Montgomery, who described helping conceal Harmony's body after being threatened and controlled by her husband. Although Harmony's body has never been located, investigators assembled sufficient forensic and circumstantial evidence to prove she had been murdered. In February 2024, a jury found Adam Montgomery guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, abuse of a corpse, falsifying physical evidence and witness tampering.

In May 2024, Adam Montgomery was sentenced to a minimum of 56 years to life in prison for Harmony's murder and related offences. The court heard emotional victim impact statements describing Harmony as a young girl who was repeatedly failed by the adults responsible for protecting her. Authorities continue searching for Harmony's remains to provide her family with answers and a final resting place.
