Stephen Beal (Long Beach, Package Bomber)

Stephen William Beal was born around 1959 and lived in Long Beach, California. He developed a longstanding interest in model rocketry and possessed substantial knowledge of rockets, propellants and explosive materials. By the time of the bombing investigation, Beal maintained equipment and materials at his home associated with his hobby, which later became a significant focus for federal investigators.

Beal was previously married to Christine Beal, who died in 2008 following medical complications after an earlier fall at their home. Her death was not ruled a homicide, and Beal was not charged in connection with it. He later entered a relationship with Hungarian-born esthetician Ildiko Krajnyak. Beal helped finance Magyar Kozmetika, the day spa Krajnyak operated in Aliso Viejo, and the two were both romantic and business partners before their personal relationship ended.

By 2018, Beal and Krajnyak's romantic relationship had deteriorated, although they remained financially connected through the spa. Prosecutors later presented evidence that Beal had become jealous and angry after Krajnyak began seeing another man. Witnesses described Beal as controlling and possessive during the relationship, while Krajnyak had expressed concerns about his behaviour.

While Krajnyak was visiting family in Hungary, Beal constructed a package bomb and placed it inside Magyar Kozmetika. She returned to California and went to the spa on May 15, 2018. When Krajnyak opened the cardboard package, the concealed explosive device detonated. The 48-year-old was killed, while two female clients who were present suffered serious injuries. The powerful explosion caused extensive damage to the spa and surrounding commercial building.

Beal constructed an improvised explosive device and concealed it inside an ordinary cardboard package, creating a device designed to detonate when it was opened. Prosecutors established that components used in the bomb could be connected to materials and purchases associated with Beal, including wire and the type of battery incorporated into the device.

The placement of the bomb allowed Beal to attack Krajnyak without being present when it detonated. Prosecutors argued that he deliberately left the device at the spa while Krajnyak was outside the United States, anticipating that she would encounter it after returning. The package remained among items at the business until she opened it on May 15.

Investigators quickly identified the explosion as an intentional bombing and began examining people connected with Krajnyak and the spa. Beal came under scrutiny because of his former relationship with Krajnyak, his financial connection to the business and his extensive knowledge of model rockets and explosive materials. He allowed investigators to search his Long Beach residence shortly after the explosion.

Authorities discovered more than 100 pounds of explosive material, along with firearms and devices that investigators considered relevant to the bombing inquiry. Beal was initially arrested on a charge involving possession of an unregistered destructive device, but that case was dismissed after questions arose over whether the seized materials met the legal definition required for the charge. He was released while the bombing investigation continued.

Federal investigators spent months reconstructing the explosive device and examining Beal's purchases, possessions and movements. Evidence included wire recovered from the bombing scene that prosecutors linked to wire found at his residence, along with surveillance footage showing Beal purchasing the type of battery used in the bomb.

On March 3, 2019, federal authorities arrested Beal again at his Long Beach home. He was charged in connection with Krajnyak's death and subsequently indicted on four federal felony counts relating to the construction, possession and use of the explosive device.

Beal was charged with use of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, malicious destruction of a building resulting in death, use of a destructive device during and in relation to a crime of violence, and possession of an unregistered destructive device. Federal prosecutors argued that jealousy and revenge provided the motive for the bombing and presented extensive forensic and circumstantial evidence connecting Beal to the device.

His first federal trial ended in March 2022 without a verdict after jurors were unable to reach unanimous agreement, resulting in a mistrial. Prosecutors elected to try Beal again. During the retrial, the government presented evidence concerning the construction of the bomb, Beal's explosives knowledge, components associated with him and the deterioration of his relationship with Krajnyak.

On July 19, 2023, a federal jury found Beal guilty on all four counts. The convictions included use of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death and malicious destruction of a building resulting in death, exposing him to life imprisonment.

On January 19, 2024, U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Staton sentenced Beal to life imprisonment plus an additional 30 years in federal prison. The sentence effectively ensured that he would remain incarcerated for the rest of his life. Beal continued to maintain his innocence and filed an appeal following sentencing.

The Beal investigation was unusually lengthy and complicated by the dismissal of his initial explosives charge and the mistrial in his first prosecution for the bombing. Federal investigators ultimately built their case through a combination of forensic reconstruction, purchasing records, surveillance footage, materials recovered from Beal's home and evidence concerning his relationship with Krajnyak. Prosecutors characterised the bombing as a carefully planned act motivated by jealousy and revenge.

The case also attracted attention because Beal's previous wife, Christine, had died approximately a decade earlier. Her death followed health complications after a fall and was classified as undetermined rather than homicide. No criminal charges were filed against Beal in connection with her death, and it should therefore be treated separately from his conviction for Krajnyak's murder.
