Joseph Kerekes

Joseph Kerekes was born in the United States and lived in Pennsylvania during the period leading up to the murder of Bryan Kocis. Public information concerning his childhood, education and early adult life is limited.

By the early 2000s, Kerekes had formed a close personal and criminal association with Harlow Cuadra. The pair became involved in escort services, fraud and schemes connected to the adult entertainment industry. Prosecutors later established that both men viewed Cobra Video and its founder, Bryan Kocis, as obstacles to obtaining substantial financial gain.

Bryan Kocis founded Cobra Video, one of the most successful gay adult film studios in the United States. Kocis had previously discovered Harlow Cuadra and launched his career under the stage name "Cole Tucker." Following contractual disputes between Cuadra and Cobra Video, prosecutors argued that Cuadra and Kerekes developed a plan to eliminate Kocis and seize control of his business.

On January 24, 2007, Kerekes and Cuadra travelled to Kocis's home in Dallas Township, Pennsylvania. After gaining entry, Kocis was attacked, restrained and had his throat slashed before suffering multiple stab wounds. The assault was so violent that he was nearly decapitated. After the murder, the perpetrators deliberately set fire to the residence in an attempt to destroy forensic evidence and disguise the homicide as a fatal house fire.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered Kocis's body inside the home. The brutality of the injuries immediately established that the fire had been used to conceal a murder rather than causing Kocis's death.

Kerekes and Cuadra carefully planned the murder to obtain financial control of Cobra Video. Prosecutors argued they intended to remove Kocis permanently so they could exploit the company's contracts, intellectual property and financial assets.

The killers entered the residence under false pretences before attacking Kocis with knives. Following the murder, they deliberately ignited fires throughout the house to destroy DNA, fingerprints and other physical evidence. Investigators later determined that the fire had been intentionally set after Kocis had already died.

Despite these efforts, investigators recovered substantial forensic evidence linking the conspiracy to both men.

The Pennsylvania State Police, Luzerne County investigators and federal authorities launched an extensive homicide investigation. Detectives reconstructed Kocis's final movements, analysed financial records and examined communications between Kerekes, Cuadra and individuals connected to Cobra Video.

DNA evidence, witness testimony, telephone records and evidence relating to fraudulent business documents gradually linked both suspects to the murder. Investigators also uncovered evidence that the pair had attempted to forge documents giving them control over Cobra Video after Kocis's death.

Kerekes and Cuadra were arrested in 2007 and charged with criminal homicide, conspiracy, robbery, burglary, arson and numerous related offences.

Kerekes was tried separately from Cuadra in Luzerne County. Prosecutors presented extensive circumstantial and forensic evidence establishing that the pair jointly planned and carried out the murder.

The prosecution argued that financial greed motivated the killing and detailed efforts to fraudulently obtain ownership of Cobra Video after Kocis's death. Jurors also heard evidence regarding the deliberate fire set to conceal the homicide.

In April 2011, the jury convicted Kerekes of first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, robbery, burglary, arson and related offences.

He was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, together with additional consecutive prison terms for the remaining convictions.

The Bryan Kocis murder became one of the most widely publicised crimes connected to the adult entertainment industry. The investigation uncovered an elaborate conspiracy involving forged legal documents, financial fraud and an attempted takeover of Cobra Video following Kocis's death.

Kerekes and Cuadra were each convicted in separate trials based upon overwhelming forensic and circumstantial evidence. The prosecution demonstrated that the murder was financially motivated rather than spontaneous, with months of planning preceding the attack. The destruction of Kocis's home by fire ultimately failed to conceal the crime, and investigators successfully reconstructed the conspiracy through DNA evidence, financial records and witness testimony.
