The Case of the Watts Family Murders
Shanann Watts, 34, and her daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, were murdered by Christopher Watts at their Frederick, Colorado home on 13 August 2018. Shanann was 15 weeks pregnant with their unborn son, Nico. Watts initially claimed his family was missing before confessing to the murders and disposing of their bodies at his workplace.

Overview / Background
Shanann Cathryn Rzucek was born in New Jersey and raised in North Carolina. She married Christopher Watts in 2012 and the couple later moved to Colorado, where they established a family and purchased a home in Frederick. Their daughters, Bella and Celeste, were born in 2013 and 2015. Shanann worked as a promoter for the health and wellness company Le-Vel and frequently shared aspects of her family life and work on social media. By 2018, the family was experiencing financial difficulties, and Shanann was pregnant with their third child, a boy they planned to name Nico. Christopher had begun an affair with co-worker Nichol Kessinger and was seeking a new life away from his marriage and family. The relationship and the couple's deteriorating marriage later became central to the investigation and prosecution. On 13 August 2018, Shanann returned home from a business trip shortly after midnight. Later that morning, Christopher killed her and their two daughters.
- Shanann Watts, 34, female, Mother and health-and-wellness promoter, Murdered by husband while 15 weeks pregnant.
- Bella Watts, 4, female, Young daughter, Murdered by her father alongside her mother and sister.
- Celeste Watts, 3, female, Young daughter, Murdered by her father alongside her mother and sister.
Crime Scene
Shanann and the girls were killed at the family's home on Saratoga Trail in Frederick. Christopher subsequently transported their bodies to the remote Cervi 319 oil site, operated by Anadarko Petroleum, where he worked. Shanann's body was buried in a shallow grave, while Bella and Celeste were placed inside separate crude-oil storage tanks. Investigators later recovered all three bodies from the oil site. Shanann's death was determined to have resulted from strangulation, while Bella and Celeste were killed by suffocation.
Investigation
Shanann's friend Nickole Atkinson became concerned when Shanann failed to respond after returning from her business trip and contacted police. Officers conducted a welfare check at the Watts home and discovered that Shanann, Bella and Celeste were missing. Christopher initially told investigators and the media that he did not know where his family was. He appeared on television asking for their safe return, while investigators examined surveillance footage, electronic records and other evidence. During a police interview on 15 August, Christopher failed a polygraph examination and eventually confessed to killing Shanann. He initially claimed that Shanann had killed the girls, but later admitted that he had killed all three himself. Investigators subsequently located the bodies at the Cervi 319 oil site. Christopher was arrested and charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and related offences.
Outcome
Christopher Watts pleaded guilty on 6 November 2018 to all nine charges against him, including five counts of first-degree murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body. The plea agreement removed the possibility of the death penalty. On 19 November 2018, Watts was sentenced to five life sentences without the possibility of parole, including three consecutive life sentences for the murders of Shanann, Bella and Celeste, plus additional consecutive sentences totalling 84 years.
Notes
The case attracted extraordinary international attention after Christopher publicly pleaded for the safe return of his supposedly missing family before confessing to their murders. The contrast between his public statements and the subsequent discovery of the bodies became one of the defining aspects of the case.
