Lauren Huxley was 18 years old when she was ambushed inside her Northmead home by stranger Robert Black Farmer in 2005. The savage attack left her with catastrophic injuries, permanent brain damage, and only a small chance of survival, but she ultimately lived through one of Australia’s most horrifying attempted murders.

On November 9, 2005, Lauren Huxley returned home from a marketing course at TAFE and entered her family’s Northmead house in western Sydney. Shortly after arriving home, she was ambushed by Robert Black Farmer, a violent repeat offender who had no known relationship with her. Farmer attacked Lauren with fibro cutters, chased her through the property, repeatedly beat her, tied her up with electrical cords, doused her in petrol, and set the house on fire before leaving her for dead. The attack was completely random and remains one of the most disturbing stranger attacks in Australian criminal history. Lauren suffered devastating injuries but survived despite doctors initially believing she had little chance of living.
The attack occurred inside the Huxley family home in Northmead. Investigators later determined Lauren had been violently assaulted in the garage area after being chased through the property. She was found semi-conscious on the garage floor surrounded by blood and petrol while the home burned around her. Lauren suffered severe skull fractures, facial fractures, brain trauma, and extensive injuries from the assault. Evidence at the scene showed she had been bound with electrical cords and deliberately left in the burning house after petrol was poured over her body and throughout parts of the residence.
Police launched a major investigation after emergency responders discovered Lauren alive inside the burning home. Forensic specialists recovered critical DNA evidence from a petrol container found near the scene, eventually linking Robert Black Farmer to the attack. Investigators also examined Farmer’s movements following the crime and uncovered suspicious behaviour, including statements suggesting he had done something serious shortly after the attack. Prosecutors argued Farmer intended to kill Lauren and destroy evidence by setting the house alight. After a lengthy trial in 2008, a jury found him guilty of attempted murder and related offences.
Robert Black Farmer was convicted in 2008 and sentenced to 24 years and six months imprisonment with a 20-year non-parole period. He was found guilty of the attempted murder and brutal assault of Lauren Huxley.
