The Case of Joseph Ryan and Christine Banfield

On February 24, 2023, Joseph Ryan, 39, was shot and killed inside the Herndon, Virginia, home of Christine and Brendan Banfield. Christine, 37, was found suffering from multiple stab wounds and later died in hospital. Prosecutors alleged that Brendan Banfield and the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, had lured Ryan to the home as part of a plan to murder Christine and make Ryan appear responsible. Banfield was convicted of both murders in 2026 and sentenced to life without parole.

Christine Banfield was a 37-year-old pediatric intensive care nurse who lived in Fairfax County, Virginia, with her husband, Brendan Banfield, their four-year-old daughter and their Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. Banfield and Magalhães had begun a romantic affair. Prosecutors later alleged that the affair became the foundation for a plan to eliminate Christine rather than end Brendan's marriage through divorce. Joseph Ryan, 39, lived in Woodbridge, Virginia, and had no prior relationship with the Banfield family. According to the prosecution, Brendan and Magalhães used FetLife, a website focused on alternative sexual and BDSM communities, while pretending to be Christine. They communicated with Ryan and eventually arranged for him to come to the Banfield residence for a sexual encounter involving consensual knife play. The prosecution argued that Ryan was unknowingly being lured into a staged murder.

On the morning of February 24, 2023, Ryan arrived at the Banfield residence. According to evidence presented at trial, Magalhães remained outside with the Banfield family's young daughter while Brendan waited nearby. Ryan entered the home carrying a knife. The prosecution's case was that Brendan and Magalhães had deliberately arranged the encounter so Ryan could be portrayed as an intruder who attacked Christine. Ryan was shot multiple times inside the master bedroom. Christine suffered multiple stab wounds and was critically injured. Police were called to the residence after reports of a stabbing and shooting. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene. Christine was transported to hospital but died from her injuries shortly afterward. The scene initially appeared consistent with Brendan's claim that he had discovered Ryan attacking his wife and intervened. The subsequent investigation, however, uncovered evidence that prosecutors said demonstrated the scene had been deliberately staged.

Investigators quickly discovered that Ryan had communicated with someone using a FetLife account representing itself as Christine. Christine herself had not been operating the account. Detectives also discovered the romantic relationship between Brendan and Magalhães, which became a major focus of the investigation. Digital evidence, including communications and internet activity, helped investigators reconstruct the relationship between Magalhães, Banfield and Ryan. Magalhães was arrested in October 2023 and initially charged with murder and firearm offenses relating to Ryan's death. In October 2024, Magalhães pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Ryan's death and agreed to testify against Brendan. Her testimony became a central part of the prosecution's case. Banfield was arrested in September 2024 and charged with multiple counts of aggravated murder involving both Christine and Ryan. Additional charges concerning the treatment of his young daughter, who was present during the killings, were subsequently added. At trial, Magalhães testified that Banfield had wanted to eliminate Christine so that he could be with her. Prosecutors presented the alleged catfishing scheme as an elaborate attempt to lure Ryan into the house and create a false explanation for Christine's murder. Banfield testified in his own defense. He acknowledged his affair with Magalhães but denied planning Christine's murder. He maintained that he encountered Ryan attacking Christine and shot him in an attempt to save his wife. The jury rejected Banfield's account.

On February 2, 2026, a Fairfax County jury convicted Brendan Banfield of two counts of aggravated murder, one involving Christine and one involving Joseph Ryan. He was also convicted of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and child endangerment. On June 5, 2026, Banfield was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the aggravated murders, with additional consecutive sentences for the firearm and child-endangerment convictions. Magalhães pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Ryan's death and was sentenced to 10 years in prison after testifying against Banfield. Banfield has since indicated that he intends to appeal his convictions.

The case became widely known as the "Au Pair Affair" because of the relationship between Brendan Banfield and the family's au pair and the unusual circumstances surrounding the two killings. Joseph Ryan was apparently selected because prosecutors said he could be lured to the home and portrayed as the attacker responsible for Christine's death.
