John Cole became one of the United Kingdom's most reviled child killers after murdering five-year-old Logan Mwangi alongside his stepfather, Angharad Williamson, in Bridgend, South Wales, in 2021. Logan suffered prolonged abuse before being fatally assaulted and his body was abandoned in a nearby river. Following a high-profile trial, Cole was convicted of murder despite being only 14 years old at the time of the offence, making him one of the youngest people convicted of murder in modern Welsh criminal history.

Early Life
John Cole was born in Wales in approximately 2006. He was raised by his mother, Angharad Williamson, and later lived in the same household as her partner, John Paul Bennett (Logan's stepfather).
Because Cole was a juvenile at the time of the offence, relatively little verified information has been publicly released regarding his upbringing, education, or personal background.
Before the murder, there was no public indication that Cole would become involved in one of Wales' most shocking child homicide cases.
Killing Spree
During the months leading up to July 2021, investigators established that five-year-old Logan Mwangi suffered repeated physical abuse inside the family home in Sarn, Bridgend.
On the night of July 30–31, 2021, Logan sustained catastrophic injuries consistent with a sustained assault. Prosecutors proved that Cole participated in the fatal attack alongside Angharad Williamson before helping dispose of Logan's body in the nearby River Ogmore.
The murder shocked the United Kingdom because of the extreme violence inflicted upon a young child and the attempts made to conceal the crime.
Modus Operandi
Investigators concluded that Cole actively participated in the assault that caused Logan's death. Medical evidence revealed Logan had suffered injuries comparable to those seen in victims of high-speed road traffic collisions.
Following the murder, Cole assisted in carrying Logan's body from the family home and abandoning it in the River Ogmore in an attempt to disguise the homicide.
Digital evidence, forensic examinations, CCTV footage, and witness testimony formed the basis of the prosecution's case against Cole and his co-defendants.
Capture
After Logan's body was discovered on July 31, 2021, South Wales Police immediately launched a major homicide investigation.
Detectives quickly identified inconsistencies in the accounts provided by members of the household. CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and mobile phone analysis contradicted their explanations of the events.
John Cole, Angharad Williamson, and another juvenile were arrested and charged as investigators reconstructed the timeline leading to Logan's death.
Trial & Sentence
John Cole stood trial alongside Angharad Williamson and the third defendant at Cardiff Crown Court in 2022.
Prosecutors presented extensive forensic evidence demonstrating Cole's involvement in the fatal assault and disposal of Logan's body. The jury found him guilty of murder.
Because he was 14 years old at the time of the offence, Cole was sentenced to detention during His Majesty's Pleasure, the mandatory sentence for juveniles convicted of murder in England and Wales. The court imposed a minimum term of 15 years before he becomes eligible for parole consideration.
Notes
The murder of Logan Mwangi prompted significant public concern regarding child safeguarding, social services, and the protection of vulnerable children. Multiple reviews examined whether opportunities to intervene had been missed before Logan's death.
During sentencing, the trial judge described the violence inflicted upon Logan as exceptionally brutal and noted that the child had suffered unimaginable abuse before his death.
John Cole remains in custody serving his life sentence. The case continues to be studied as one of the most disturbing examples of child homicide in modern Wales.
