The release of police bodycam footage showing the final moments of Southampton student Henry Nowak has reignited national debate in the United Kingdom, with renewed scrutiny falling on both his killer and the police response that followed the fatal attack.
The footage, released as part of ongoing investigations into the incident, captures scenes that many viewers have described as deeply distressing. Rather than immediately being treated as the victim of a violent stabbing, the 18-year-old university student was handcuffed by officers while suffering catastrophic injuries. Nearby stood the man who had stabbed him, Vickrum Digwa, who had falsely portrayed himself as the victim.
The video has renewed public attention on a case that shocked Britain when it first unfolded in Southampton in December 2025.
A Night That Ended in Tragedy
Henry Nowak was just 18 years old and beginning university life when he encountered Vickrum Digwa in Southampton city centre.
What followed was a brief but deadly confrontation.
Court proceedings later heard that Digwa was carrying a large bladed weapon and stabbed Nowak multiple times during the incident. Witnesses reported seeing the teenager collapse to the ground as emergency services were called.
As Henry lay critically injured, Digwa immediately began constructing a false narrative for responding officers.
Instead of admitting responsibility, prosecutors said he claimed that he had been subjected to racist abuse and attacked by Nowak. He alleged that the teenager had targeted him because of his appearance and religious identity.
Those claims would ultimately prove to be completely false.
The Lie That Changed Everything
One of the most controversial aspects of the case was not the stabbing itself, but what happened in the minutes afterward.
Bodycam footage later revealed officers initially accepted Digwa's account of events. As a result, attention was directed toward the gravely wounded Henry rather than the man who had inflicted the injuries.
The footage shows officers questioning and restraining the teenager while he repeatedly attempted to explain what had happened.
By that stage, Henry had already suffered life-threatening wounds.
The images have since become central to public anger surrounding the case. Critics argue that the false accusations made by Digwa influenced officers during the critical early stages of the investigation and potentially delayed recognition of the seriousness of Henry's condition.
The incident has also prompted an independent investigation into police actions at the scene.
Detectives Uncover the Truth
While Digwa's initial version of events created confusion, detectives soon began uncovering evidence that contradicted his account.
