Luigi Mangione Admits Killing Brian Thompson as Guilty Plea Throws New York Murder Trial Into Doubt
Luigi Mangione has admitted that he stalked and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, bringing a dramatic new development to one of America's most closely followed murder cases. Mangione pleaded guilty in a Manhattan federal court on August 14 to two federal stalking charges connected to Thompson's death, just weeks before he was due to face a separate murder trial in New York State. The guilty plea was the culmination of months of legal battles surrounding the December 2024 killing, which triggered a nationwide manhunt and attracted extraordinary public attention. Mangione had previously pleaded not guilty and was preparing to fight both the federal and state cases. His decision to change his plea has now raised a much bigger question: whether he will ever face a separate state murder trial for Thompson's death.
