On the night of June 8, 2011, Guenevere visited her father's home in Hawthorne, Florida, spending several hours with him before he went to bed. After he fell asleep, she attacked him with a pickaxe, inflicting fatal injuries. Stephanie later called 911 and initially attempted to portray the killing as a robbery. Detectives quickly identified inconsistencies in the pair's accounts, leading to a homicide investigation. As investigators examined the evidence, Guenevere confessed and told detectives that her mother had planned the murder and convinced her to carry it out. The case became a notable example of manipulation within a family culminating in a planned homicide.

Bill Hudnall was found dead in his bed inside his Hawthorne home after suffering multiple blows from a pickaxe while he slept. The attack was sudden and left little indication that Bill had been able to defend himself. Stephanie and Guenevere were originally charged with first-degree murder but later entered no-contest pleas to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, avoiding a capital trial.

In September 2012, Stephanie Hudnall and Guenevere Hudnall were each sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. Prosecutors described Stephanie as the architect of the crime, while Guenevere carried out the fatal attack. Both remain incarcerated in Florida.

Joshua Hudnall, Bill's son, later publicly described years of manipulation and abuse within the family, alleging his mother repeatedly attempted to kill Bill before the successful attack in 2011. His account brought renewed public attention to the case through national television and highlighted the psychological control Stephanie allegedly exercised over her daughter.
