Authorities alleged Shanda Vander Ark controlled nearly every aspect of Timothy’s life and used cruel punishments for minor behaviour issues. Investigators later uncovered disturbing text messages exchanged between Vander Ark and Paul Ferguson documenting the abuse in real time. The case drew national outrage due to the prolonged torture and extreme neglect Timothy suffered before his death.

Emergency responders were called to the home on July 6, 2022, where Timothy Ferguson was found unresponsive and severely emaciated. Investigators documented evidence of prolonged neglect, malnutrition, and physical abuse throughout the residence. The autopsy later revealed Timothy died from complications related to starvation and hypothermia. Prosecutors stated he had been subjected to repeated ice baths, food deprivation, and physical torture leading up to his death.
