On March 4, 2022, he was found unresponsive inside the family home after allegedly consuming a mixed drink prepared by Kouri during a date night celebration. Authorities later alleged Kouri Richins administered a fatal dose of fentanyl to her husband. The case attracted national attention after it emerged that Kouri had later written and promoted a children’s grief book about coping with the loss of a parent following Eric’s death. Prosecutors also alleged financial motives and uncovered evidence relating to previous suspected poisoning attempts.

Eric Richins was discovered unresponsive in the bedroom of the family home in Kamas, Utah. Emergency responders were unable to revive him, and investigators later determined he died from a fentanyl overdose.
