Description
On October 5, 2012, 58-year-old Gail Spencer became the victim of a violent home invasion orchestrated by a group later known as the Macon Four. The offenders were not searching for valuables inside Spencer’s home, but instead targeted the escrow accounts connected to the law firm where she worked. Tracy Jones gained entry to the residence by pretending her car had broken down before secretly allowing Keith Dozier and Brett Kelly into the house armed with a firearm.
Once inside, Dozier and Kelly restrained Spencer and forced her to provide passwords, banking credentials and security information needed to authorize large wire transfers. While Courtney Kelly and Tracy Jones attempted to move stolen funds through pre-arranged accounts, Gail Spencer remained held captive inside her own home for hours. Investigators later revealed she suffered severe physical abuse and sexual violence during the ordeal.
As fear of being identified grew among the offenders, the group ultimately decided to kill Gail Spencer to eliminate witnesses and protect the stolen money. Detectives later discovered efforts to conceal the crime, including bleach poured over the body, attempts to delay decomposition and text messages sent while impersonating Spencer to avoid immediate suspicion. The conspiracy eventually unraveled after a failed recruit contacted police and provided investigators with critical information about the robbery and murder plot.
Keith Dozier later rejected a plea agreement and proceeded to trial, where prosecutors presented evidence connecting him directly to the kidnapping, assault and murder. He was ultimately convicted of malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault before receiving a sentence of life without parole plus 20 years.
