The attack began when Tracy Jones approached Spencer’s home pretending her vehicle had broken down and asked to use the phone and bathroom. Once inside, she secretly allowed the remaining offenders access to the property.
Brett Kelly and Keith Dozier entered the home armed with a handgun before restraining Spencer and forcing her to surrender passwords, banking credentials and security information needed to authorize large wire transfers. Courtney Kelly helped coordinate financial accounts used to receive the stolen funds while the group successfully transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars from the law firm. Authorities later discovered the theft eventually exceeded $1 million.
While part of the group attempted to move the stolen money, Gail Spencer was held hostage inside her own home where she was brutally assaulted and tortured for hours. Investigators later revealed she suffered severe physical abuse before the group ultimately decided to kill her to prevent identification and prosecution. In an effort to delay discovery of the crime, the offenders attempted to stage the scene by lowering the thermostat, pouring bleach over the body and impersonating Spencer through text messages sent to her employer.
