Israel Keyes became one of America's most infamous serial killers after carrying out a series of meticulously planned murders across multiple states between 2001 and 2012. Unlike many serial offenders, Keyes travelled extensively, buried "kill kits" years in advance, and deliberately selected victims with no personal connection to him. Although he confessed to eight murders, investigators believe the true number of victims may never be known due to his suicide before revealing the full extent of his crimes.

Jim Jones was an American cult leader and founder of the Peoples Temple, best known for orchestrating the mass murder-suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978. He established a following based on religious and social ideals, eventually relocating his group to a remote settlement where he exerted extreme psychological control over members. Jones’ leadership became increasingly authoritarian and paranoid, culminating in the deaths of over 900 people, including children, after he directed followers to consume a poisoned drink. The incident remains one of the largest mass deaths in modern history and cemented Jones as one of the most infamous cult leaders of all time.

Leonard Thomas Lake became one of the most infamous serial killers in American history after operating a secluded compound in Wilseyville, California, with accomplice Charles Ng during the early 1980s. Investigators believe the pair murdered at least 11 people, although the true number of victims may be significantly higher. Their crimes came to light in 1985 following Lake's arrest for shoplifting, leading police to uncover buried human remains, extensive video recordings, journals, and evidence documenting one of the most disturbing serial murder investigations in United States history.

Luigi Mangione became internationally known after being accused of assassinating a major American healthcare executive in New York City in 2024. The killing shocked the United States not only because of the high-profile target, but also because authorities alleged the attack was ideologically motivated and carefully planned. Following his arrest, Mangione rapidly became one of the most discussed criminal figures in modern America. The case generated enormous political and cultural debate surrounding healthcare systems, online radicalization, anti-corporate extremism and public reactions to targeted violence. His background as a highly educated young man from a privileged upbringing further intensified national fascination surrounding the case.

Michael Paul Brown became known after carrying out the deadly Owl Bar shooting in Montana, killing four people during a violent attack that shocked the local community. The massacre unfolded inside and around the Owl Bar in Anaconda, Montana, where Brown targeted victims connected to a long-running personal dispute before fleeing the scene. Authorities described Brown as a heavily armed and dangerous suspect whose actions triggered a large-scale manhunt and emergency lockdowns across the region. The case generated widespread media coverage because of the sudden brutality of the attack, the multiple homicide victims and the dramatic police confrontation that followed shortly afterward.

Ryan Gene Erickson was a Catholic priest in Wisconsin who was identified after his death as the likely perpetrator of the 2002 double murder of funeral director Daniel O'Connell and mortuary science intern James Ellison. The two men were shot inside O'Connell's funeral home in Hudson, Wisconsin, on February 5, 2002. Investigators eventually developed evidence linking Erickson to the killings, including his knowledge of previously unreleased crime-scene details and an alleged admission to a church deacon. Police questioned him in late 2004 and searched his rectory, but Erickson died by suicide on December 19, 2004, before he could be arrested. In October 2005, a judge ruled there was probable cause to conclude that Erickson had committed the murders.

Shane Devon Tamura became the perpetrator of one of New York City's deadliest shootings in decades after opening fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on July 28, 2025. The attack killed four people and injured several others before Tamura died by suicide. Investigators concluded that he had intended to target the National Football League (NFL) headquarters housed within the building and found writings indicating grievances related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), although the full motive remains under investigation.

Shawn “Mickey” Stines is a former Letcher County, Kentucky, sheriff charged with the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins, his former boss and friend. On September 19, 2024, Stines entered Mullins’ chambers at the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg and shot him multiple times. Surveillance footage captured the shooting, and Stines surrendered to police immediately afterward. He has pleaded not guilty and is pursuing a mental-health defence, with his attorneys arguing that he lacked the capacity to intend to kill Mullins. As of August 2026, Stines remains in custody without bail awaiting trial.
