In December 2019, 10-year-old Takoda Collins died in Dayton, Ohio, following years of severe abuse inflicted by his father, Al-Mutahan McLean. The case revealed prolonged systemic failures and a pattern of escalating violence that ultimately resulted in the child’s death.
Investigators found evidence of ongoing abuse within the home, including conditions consistent with neglect and confinement. The attic space where Takoda had reportedly been kept was small, dark, and unsuitable for habitation, supporting claims of prolonged isolation.
Authorities uncovered a pattern of abuse spanning several years, beginning around 2015. This included beatings, forced stress positions, and confinement. In 2018, McLean removed Takoda from school under the claim of homeschooling, effectively isolating him from mandatory reporters. Despite multiple reports to child protective services and school officials, interventions failed to prevent the continued abuse. Medical findings determined that Takoda died from blunt force trauma, compressive asphyxia, and submersion in water.
