On February 4, 2010, the McStay family disappeared from their home in Fallbrook, California. Years later, their remains were discovered in the Mojave Desert, revealing that they had been murdered. The case ultimately led to the conviction of Charles “Chase” Merritt.
The victims were found buried in shallow graves in a remote desert location. Evidence indicated they had been killed using blunt force, with a sledgehammer recovered near the burial site playing a key role in the investigation.
Investigators identified Merritt as a suspect after uncovering financial irregularities, including forged checks and unauthorized withdrawals from Joseph McStay’s business accounts. Phone records placed Merritt in contact with Joseph shortly before the disappearance, and he admitted to being the last known person to see him alive. The financial motive, combined with forensic evidence and behavior following the disappearance, formed the foundation of the case against him.
