On October 2, 2012, Lyle Kopenkoskey was murdered in Resort Township, Michigan, by his wife, Carol Kopenkoskey. The killing followed a long-term extramarital affair and financial motives, revealing a calculated act that contradicted initial claims of a spontaneous incident.
The victim was shot five times with a .38 caliber revolver, including multiple gunshot wounds to the back and a fatal shot to the head. The location and method indicated a targeted and controlled attack rather than a random act of violence.
Investigators uncovered that Carol had been involved in a long-term affair with John Ernst. Evidence also revealed that she had previously attempted to hire a hitman, offering payment to have her husband killed. Following the murder, the weapon was dismantled and disposed of by throwing it off the Mackinac Bridge. Financial records showed that Carol attempted to claim a substantial life insurance payout shortly after Lyle’s death. Additional findings included materials related to committing and concealing crimes, supporting the theory of premeditation.
