The assault of Jeffrey Rignall is one of the most critical non-fatal encounters involving John Wayne Gacy. Unlike many victims, Rignall survived, providing rare and detailed insight into Gacy’s methods, behavior, and psychological state. This case is particularly significant because it offered law enforcement an early opportunity to identify Gacy. However, despite Rignall’s detailed account, insufficient evidence at the time prevented immediate action.
Gacy lured Rignall into his vehicle and exposed him to chloroform, rendering him unconscious. When Rignall regained awareness, he found himself restrained inside Gacy’s home. He was subjected to prolonged assault, torture, and humiliation, including being bound and abused. Unlike other victims, Rignall was eventually released rather than killed, though the reasons remain unclear. It is possible Gacy believed he had not been identified or simply chose to let him go.
Rignall reported the incident to police and later identified Gacy as his attacker. However, at the time, there was insufficient evidence to support charges. The failure to act on Rignall’s report remains one of the most significant missed opportunities in the case, as it could have prevented future murders.
