The Case of the Other Night Stalker Victims and Attacks

Richard Ramirez's 1984–1985 crime spree involved far more victims and incidents than the murders covered by his 13 murder convictions. He attacked people throughout Southern California and, during the final days of his spree, in San Francisco. This consolidated case file records the additional victims and incidents that are not represented by individual CrimeTrakr case files.

Richard Ramirez's known criminal activity began with the murder of Jennie Vincow in Los Angeles in June 1984. After a period during which his crimes were not publicly connected, Ramirez began a prolonged series of home invasions in Southern California in March 1985. His attacks involved murder, attempted murder, sexual assault, robbery and burglary. Victims ranged widely in age. Ramirez targeted people in their homes, often entering during the night while occupants were asleep. The attacks eventually became so widespread that several Southern California law-enforcement agencies established a coordinated investigation. By August 1985, the public had been warned about a serial killer operating in the region. Ramirez's final known attacks occurred in the San Francisco area shortly before his arrest.

The remaining incidents occurred across Los Angeles County, San Bernardino County, Orange County and the San Francisco Bay Area. Many involved residential burglaries followed by assaults, sexual attacks or attempted murders. Some victims survived and became important witnesses. Ramirez frequently left behind evidence, including fingerprints, footwear impressions, ballistic evidence and stolen property. These pieces of evidence eventually allowed investigators to connect numerous incidents to the same offender.

The investigation expanded rapidly as detectives from different jurisdictions began comparing evidence from apparently unrelated crimes. Surviving victims provided descriptions of the attacker, while forensic evidence connected individual crime scenes. A distinctive Avia shoe print became particularly important because similar impressions appeared at multiple locations. The murder of Joyce Nelson in July 1985 was an important turning point, helping investigators recognise the scale of the series. On August 8, Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block publicly confirmed that a serial killer was responsible for the growing number of attacks. The public release of Ramirez's photograph and fingerprints ultimately led to his identification. On August 30, 1985, police released Ramirez's photograph to the public. The following day, residents in East Los Angeles recognised him and chased him after he was spotted in the neighborhood. Police arrived and arrested him. Following his arrest, investigators connected him to the numerous crimes committed during the Night Stalker series.

Ramirez was prosecuted for a large number of crimes. In 1989, he was convicted of 13 murders, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. He was sentenced to death. Ramirez remained on death row until his death from complications of B-cell lymphoma at San Quentin State Prison on June 7, 2013.

Not every surviving victim or burglary requires an individual case file, but their existence is important to understanding the scale of the Night Stalker's criminal activity.
