The shooting of Carl Denaro and Rosemary Keenan represented the second confirmed Son of Sam attack and began establishing a pattern. Berkowitz again targeted a young couple in a parked vehicle, reinforcing his method of sudden, unprovoked violence. At this stage, law enforcement had not yet publicly linked the incidents.
Berkowitz approached the parked car and fired at close range, striking Denaro. The attack followed the same ambush-style method seen in the first shooting.
Ballistics evidence began to suggest a connection between this and the earlier shooting. Investigators started to consider the possibility of a serial offender.
