On July 19, 2023, Barry Schmalbach disappeared following an argument with his partner, Christopher Davis, in Cape Coral, Florida. The case evolved into a homicide investigation despite the absence of a body, ultimately leading to Davis’s conviction based on a combination of forensic and circumstantial evidence.
Investigators focused on the shared residence, where neighbors reported hearing disturbances, including loud noises and signs of a struggle. Additional reports described movement consistent with dragging and attempts to conceal activity within the apartment.
Surveillance footage showed Davis purchasing items including a tarp, duct tape, shovel, and tools consistent with body disposal. He was also linked to short-term rentals under an alias shortly after the disappearance. Financial records revealed use of the victim’s credit cards following his disappearance. Digital evidence, including search history and location data, further placed Davis at key locations tied to the investigation. Cadaver dogs later indicated the presence of decomposition in the victim’s vehicle, strengthening the case despite the absence of a body.
