In the early hours of September 19, 2017, police in Palm Coast, Florida rushed to a quiet neighborhood where 36-year-old Ahmad "Shad" Laster — a father of seven — lay bleeding in his best friend's driveway, shot once in the head. As Officer Weston fought to keep him alive, the only witness could say little, and the case looked like an unsolvable late-night shooting. But a neighbor's security camera had captured the whole encounter, and when Shad's own family watched the footage, they recognized the gunman as his cousin, 41-year-old Clarence Murphy. What followed was one of the most tragic and senseless motives investigators had ever seen: a deadly argument over an EBT card with no money on it. In the interrogation room, lead detective George Hristakopoulos — who had personally known Shad for years — slowly dismantled Clarence's story until he broke down and confessed, even drawing a map to the canal where he'd thrown the gun. Charged with first-degree murder, Clarence Murphy ultimately pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life behind bars.
