A MetaFilter user named JannaK lost her grandmother from brain cancer in 1996, but not before she left an intricate series of coded messages behind. During her final weeks, the grandmother filled dozens of index cards with long strings of letters that made no sense. Because her grandmother could not communicate toward the end of her life, JannaK and her cousins assumed the index cards were her attempts at a code. Although they worked tirelessly to decipher it, the family could not figure out what the index cards meant. No two index cards matched, and many contained repeating combinations of letters. Her grandmother frequently added backwards commas to the code, and the cards were filled with line breaks that looked as if they indicated stanzas in song lyrics or poetry. Strangely, the letters Z, X, and Q never appear in the code, with the letter Y appearing only once. As soon as Jenna posted the cards online, users cracked the code within 14 minutes. One user quickly identified that the letters on the back of the card represented the first letter of each word in a prayer. Building off of this, the forum worked together to decode the front of the card, revealing that JannaK’s grandmother used her final hours to write an extensive personal prayer wishing for the wellbeing of her family.
