THe Transit Authority building was known for its intense security, some claiming this room was more closely guarded than even the President of the United States. But on a warm, spring afternoon in 1979, the building was robbed and more than $600,000 in cash was stolen from the vault. The building's CCTV systems had blacked out due to scheduled maintenance, and a robber working with someone on the inside managed to evade the surrounding guards and make their way into the vault, completely undetected. The criminals made their way to the upper level of the building, pulled a 120-pound bag containing thousands of $10 bills out of the vault, then tossed it to someone on the ground level without leaving a single shred of evidence behind. Mind you, this happened on a busy day in the middle of downtown Brooklyn, but no one witnessed anything. To this day, the heist remains unsolved and none of the money has ever been recovered.
