WATCH: https://youtu.be/TaTGUTzxTVk An Hour To Kill Episode 16 - Donald Idiens In this episode of An Hour to Kill, the story unfolds at the Imperial Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 9th, 1997. A hotel housekeeper begins what seems like an ordinary morning shift but the events of the past 24 hours have left behind secrets that will take years to unravel. Donald Idiens, a 53-year-old real estate developer and avid poker player from Vancouver Island, Canada, steps away from a game at the Mirage Hotel to collect a $1,000 debt from a man he had only recently met at the poker tables. He leaves $822 in chips behind, fully expecting to return. He never does. Meanwhile, a guest at the Imperial Palace makes a series of suspicious moves at the front desk requesting that his real name, credit card information, and phone records be wiped from the system, paying in cash, checking out under a false name, and making multiple trips back to his room without explanation. When housekeeping staff eventually discover an unidentified body in a 17th-floor stairwell, investigators begin piecing together a chilling timeline. The victim is identified as Donald Idiens. The prime suspect, Greg Chao a fellow Canadian from British Columbia drowning in gambling debts to dangerous individuals had lured Donald to his room under the pretense of repaying the loan. What followed was a brutal assault. Chao then methodically attempted to erase every trace of his presence before fleeing back to Canada. The investigation spans two countries and nearly a decade. Housekeeper Donna Smith unknowingly cleans the crime scene in room 18136, encountering a stubborn stain on the bathroom floor and wall that refuses to come out. Her diligence and detailed account, along with surveillance footage, hotel records partially recovered from the system, and the testimony of multiple witnesses, all prove crucial to building the case. After years of extradition proceedings, a mistrial in 2005, and a second trial in 2007, Greg Chao is ultimately convicted of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon and robbery, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This episode is a testament to the power of cooperation between witnesses, law enforcement, and international jurisdictions and to the quiet heroism of an everyday worker who refused to simply punch the clock and move on.
