WATCH: https://youtu.be/o_UlTsytv7E Scotland's Murder Mysteries Episode 2 - Madeleine Smith In this episode of Scotland's Murder Mysteries, one of the most captivating unsolved cases in Victorian history takes centre stage the story of Madeleine Smith, a young woman from one of Glasgow's most prominent families, who walked free from court in 1857 and never fully explained what she knew. Glasgow in the 1850s was a city of rigid class boundaries and carefully guarded reputations. Into this world, Madeleine Smith was born the eldest daughter of respected architect James Smith, her future mapped out in advance: finishing school, accomplishments, and a suitable marriage. What no one anticipated was Madeleine herself. When she encountered Emile L'Angelier an exotic, flamboyant, and socially ambitious clerk something ignited immediately. What followed was a passionate secret correspondence of over 200 letters, clandestine meetings through basement windows, and an intimacy that, had it become public, would have destroyed her entirely. L'Angelier kept every letter she sent him. She begged for them back. He refused. When Madeleine accepted a proposal from a wealthy, respectable suitor in early 1857, the situation turned dangerous. L'Angelier showed no intention of releasing her or her letters. Then, in February and March of that year, Madeleine visited Glasgow chemists on three separate occasions and purchased arsenic. Weeks later, L'Angelier was dead. A postmortem found enough arsenic in his body to have killed many men. Madeleine was arrested, tried, and acquitted under Scotland's controversial "not proven" verdict a result that sent the public gallery into raucous cheering but settled nothing. She left Scotland, lived to the age of 92, and never spoke publicly about the case. Did she do it? The question has captivated historians, legal scholars, and true crime readers for over 165 years. As one expert puts it in this episode: "Did she or didn't she? I don't think we can ever know. And we'll just have to live with that." #KillerCrime #FullFreeMovies #TrueCrime #ScotlandsMurderMysteries #VictorianMystery #MadelineSmith #HistoricalCrime Welcome to ‘Killer’ Crime, where we delve into the intriguing world of crime.
