Today’s true crime case takes us to 2015 when Judy Malinowski was a 31 year old mother of 2 who had not had an easy life, she had beaten cancer twice but had developed an addiction to opiates. She was vulnerable and this made her a perfect target for a dangerous extremely violent domestic abuser called Michael Slager. He used drugs to control Judy and expected absolute compliance from her in the relationship. Refusal was not an option, and he was willing to kill those who defied him. On August 5th, around 11 weeks after the relationship began the pair had an argument at a petrol station, Judy threw a cup of soda at Slager and he responded by dousing her in petrol and setting her on fire all of which was caught on camera. This resulted in Judy suffering burns to over 80% of her body. Judy defied the doctors’ expectations and survived for almost 2 years, fighting every day, often in excruciating pain, due to her determination to see the man who had done this to her brought to justice and to help others in the future. Before she passed away Judy recorded a deposition describing the horrific attack. This was the first time in US criminal history where a victim had given testimony at their own murder trial.
