On February 24th, 2024, police in Campbellsville, Kentucky received a 911 call to Campbellsville University, reporting an unresponsive male inside one of the dorm rooms. Officers and emergency personnel arrived shortly after. EMS began life-saving measures on 18-year-old Josiah Kilman, a freshman and member of the university's wrestling team. He was transported to Taylor Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. While securing the scene, officers located a backpack inside the dorm room containing a laptop, cell phone, and identification belonging to a fellow student and wrestling teammate — 21-year-old Charles Ezekiel Escalera. He quickly became the focus of the investigation. An autopsy later determined the cause of death to be asphyxia by manual strangulation, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide. Surveillance footage from the university showed Escalera entering the dorm with a backpack the night before, then leaving without it less than an hour later. Additional footage placed him at a nearby Walmart that morning. An arrest warrant was issued for murder. That afternoon, Green County 911 received a call from a property owner reporting a man matching Escalera's description inside his hay barn. Kentucky State Police and the Green County Sheriff's Office responded and took Escalera into custody without incident. He was transported to the Campbellsville Police Department, where his interview with detectives was captured on the following video.
