Dr. John Dale Cavaness was charismatic, devoted to his patients, and held an almost cult-like status in his small farming community. To his own family, he was something else entirely volatile, controlling, and incapable of the warmth he so freely gave to strangers. When his eldest son Mark failed to appear at a family Easter gathering he had personally planned, the family found him dead on his father's farm. Police ruled it an accident. Mark was experienced with firearms. The questions raised were never fully pursued. Seven years later, in December 1984, Dale paid a late-night visit to his son Sean a recovering alcoholic struggling to rebuild his life in St. Louis. Neighbors noted the car. The two men spent an hour together. Then they drove out of the city. Sean was found in a field the following day, miles from town. When investigators asked Dale whether he had recently seen his son, he said no. Neighbors contradicted that account. His story changed twice. Each new version raised more questions than it answered. As police dug deeper, a pattern emerged: both sons had life insurance policies taken out in their father's name. Dale was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. At trial, forensic experts testified that Sean's death could not have been self-inflicted. Marian and Dale's surviving son Kevin testified about years of abuse. Dale, convinced of his own superiority, chose to cross-examine the forensic witness himself. It was the last mistake he made in court. Dr. Dale Cavaness was convicted of murdering both his sons and sentenced to death. On death row he remained calm and cooperative until November 17th, 1986 the day before the last life insurance policy in his name was set to expire.
