Police soon learned that Erika had last been seen on September 25th. She had been with 54-year-old Eric Pierson. When investigators looked into Pierson, they discovered that he had been convicted of attempted murder in 1985 and of the murder of 17-year-old Kristina Whitaker in 1993. He had gotten out of prison in 2020 on supervised release. Given Pierson's violent past and him having been seen with Erika around the time of her disappearance, investigators searched his vehicle, discovering blood in the back seat. When Erika's body was discovered in a canal in Davie, Florida, the case officially became a homicide investigation.
