WATCH: https://youtu.be/o_UlTsytv7E Scotland's Murder Mysteries Episode 3 - Jessie McClachlan In this episode of Scotland's Murder Mysteries, one of the most controversial miscarriages of justice in Victorian Scotland is brought to light the Sandyford Place murder of 1862, a case that divided an entire city and left a question unanswered for over 150 years. In the early hours of July 5th, 1862, three sisters walking along Sauchiehall Road heard a wailing from a nearby house and chose not to investigate. Had they done so, the identity of the Sandyford killer might have been revealed that very night. Jess McPherson was the trusted servant at 17 Sandyford Place a grand West End townhouse owned by the prosperous Fleming family. She had complained on more than one occasion about the unwanted attentions of the elderly family patriarch, James Fleming, a self-made man with a troubling history with women in his service. On the evening of July 4th, Jess's close friend Jessie McLachlan came to visit. Old Fleming joined them. What happened over the following hours became the subject of one of the most sensational criminal trials of the Victorian age. When the family returned home that Monday, they found Jess dead on the floor of her locked bedroom with fatal injuries. Suspicion fell on Jessie McLachlan. She had been seen at the house. Stolen silver was traced back to her. Bloodstained clothing had been disposed of. She gave five contradictory statements. Old Fleming testified calmly against her in court though under cross-examination, he let slip that he already knew Jess was dead when he answered the door to the milk boy that Saturday morning. For the first time in Scottish criminal history, forensic photography was used. Bloodstained footprints on the floor were matched to Jessie McLachlan. The judge entered court on verdict day carrying his black cap. The jury took less than fifteen minutes. Jessie was sentenced to death. Fifty thousand signatures were gathered in Glasgow alone. The sentence was commuted to fifteen years in prison. Old Fleming walked free and was never charged. The case remains officially unsolved to this day.
