Tatiana Tsimfer and Liubov Svirkova had saved up for months to escape the Siberian winter for the tropical beaches of Pattaya. After days of temples, motorcycles, and nightlife, they stepped out of a club in the early hours of February 24th, 2007, bought cigarettes and a drink, and made their way to the sand to wait for dawn. A hotel security guard heard gunshots shortly after. When he reached the table, both women were dead. Their wallets, jewelry, and phones had not been touched. Nothing taken. No witnesses. A man seen walking calmly to a red and black motorcycle and driving away. Investigators quickly realized this didn't look like a robbery gone wrong. The shooting was too precise, too fast, too deliberate. With a strong Russian presence in Pattaya and a note found in one of the victim's passports written to her mother, suggesting she might not come home the case began to take on a much darker shape. A suspect was eventually identified, arrested, and convicted. A murder weapon was pulled from a pond. A confession was given. But the national police chief himself said the confession didn't add up.
