Big Brother AIDS (Medical Documentary) (2019)
Big Brother Africa is a fever that is infecting all of sub-Saharan Africa, grabbing the attention of millions of viewers and giving rise to passionate debate: ‘How is it possible to broadcast the love stories of these young housemates, their kisses, their talking about sex' – some people are saying – 'in a continent where young people are being decimated by AIDS?'. Big Brother AIDS explores how the attitudes of everyday people towards the virus can be detrimental to the war against AIDS. With many people living in slums (where every family has suffered a loss due to HIV) stating that AIDS is the work of witchcraft and has nothing to do with unprotected sex, the fight against AIDS is made even more difficult. Henry, a 23 year old student, was diagnosed as HIV positive shortly after leaving school. He has since dedicated his life to preventing and raising awareness of AIDS. For him, a great part of beating the epidemic is talking openly about the virus, sex and sexuality. He visits as a guest on Nikinzi’s radio show to speak about his experiences and how he plans to help stop the spreading of the virus. Mama Joyce is a nurse at a free AIDS clinic and deals with the suffering AIDS causes everyday. For each of these people, AIDS is not associated with fear, shame, denial, death and silence, but has everything to do with awareness, advice, comfort, care, and hope. Follow the work of these three AIDS fighters as they try not only to raise awareness, but also provide help and hope for sufferers of the virus. The Fall of El Chapo (True Crime Documentary) Real Stories (2019)
The Fall of El Chapo (True Crime Documentary) | Real Stories Angus Macqueen and Guillermo Galdos attempt what the combined forces of the US and Mexican governments failed to do for 13 years – to track down Joaquin Guzman, one of the most wanted men in the world. Guzman, known as ‘El Chapo’ or ‘Shorty’ was head of the most powerful drugs cartel in history. To some, he is a revolutionary hero and a latter-day Robin Hood, the powerful peasant who looks after his people. To others, he is Public Enemy No. 1, the first since Al Capone, on the run for over a decade. Forbes Magazine has labelled him one of the richest and most powerful men on earth. All this time over 80,000 mexicans have been murdered. The filmmakers quixotic journey, fuelled by the specially composed songs of Jackson Scott, takes them from the streets of Chicago into his forbidden heartland in the Mexican Golden Triangle, telling his astonishing life story along the way. The film ends up in a world where few outsiders have ever been and basic truths behind the “war on drugs” emerge as they get ever closer to this “legendary” figure. BAKUR: The First Inside Look at the PKKs Guerrilla Life (2019)
Shot in secret, BAKUR: Inside the PKK is the worlds first documentary made with inside access to the Kurdish separatist group, who are considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and NATO. The result is an inside look at the undeclared war going on in Turkey for decades. This was the first time any film crew had ever accessed these camps. To date, the PKK has lost over 30 thousand of its members in combat against the Turkish State. What is the PKK’s perception of the state, justice and authority? What constitutes the foundation of their relationship to the people? How did the Kurdish movement evolve over the years into a battle for freedom founded on the women’s rights movement? How do the guerrillas who have been living under wartime conditions for 40 years manage to survive all year-round in the harsh outdoor living conditions in the mountains? In search for answers to all of these questions, BAKUR: Inside the PKK introduces the audience to men and women who have chosen to join the armed resistance in order to create a new future. We witness life in three guerrilla camps located in three different regions of Kurdish territory within the Turkish borders. Beautifully shot over months, we follow the lives of guerrilla fighters including the training and graduation of new recruits, their justice system and the progressive philosophies that guide them. Prince Charles And Prince William: Royal Rivals Or Father And Son? Real Stories (2019)
This original programme asks how Charles and William have stayed so visibly fond of each other. A generous son to his father, and a great role model for his brother, William was always an enormous comfort for his mother. The death of a mother, the alienation of a wife and a lover in the background- these striking events somehow have not broken the love of these two men-father and son. Very different people, father and son may yet become rivals as public opinion builds against Charles and Camilla becoming King and Queen. Unlike Charles, William is a man of his time and perhaps here is where the rivalry could emerge-what sort of image should the King have in an increasingly modern and multicultural Britain?
