On 5th August 2010, 33 miners were trapped nearly 700m below ground in the Atacama Desert, Chile. After 69 days underground, the miner’s dramatic rescue on the 13th October was watched by their anxious families and a global audience of many millions of well-wishers. This film charts the highs and lows of the rescue operation as step by step the rescuers planned and executed the miner’s release. Since then more people have conquered Everest than successfully swum across the Channel. To this day, it remains the ultimate open water swimming challenge. This documentary tells the story of those who keep Captain Webb's vision alive - the volunteer coaches and the unlikeliest of athletes who they tirelessly support in their dream to swim from England to France. The rules are simple - no physical aids, no wimp/wet suits, just a swimsuit, goggles, the all-important swimming cap and a spot of grease to stop the chafing. At the heart of the community are pensioners Freda, Irene and Barry. They can be found in Dover every weekend from May to September come rain or shine, ready to train, feed and grease the wannabe Channel swimmers. The swimmers do not take on this arduous journey alone, and also rely on the skill of the pilots who navigate them safely to the other side of the busiest shipping lane in the world. The community share their highs and lows both in and out of the water as they train together on this small stretch of pebbled beach shadowed by the ferry port. Once homeless, many children turn to glue sniffing and become infected with HIV. Street children is a relatively new problem in Russia, and many blame the collapse of communism for the rise in family breakdowns and homelessness. "For me, the most dangerous thing about living on the street is paedophiles," states Max. "I know a lot of people who have been abused." Despite this risk, both boys would rather remain homeless than return to their families. In a country where any criticism of the state is not tolerated, we meet the young Turkish people prepared to fast themselves to death to preserve their political integrity. Fikret and Deniz are typical of the hunger strikers. Young, and from a poor background, they believe that communism will make Turkey a better place. Turkey has a long record for total intolerance of dissent, and it's this extreme repression that has led to such an extreme form of protest. Known as "Operation Return to Life", 10,000 military police stormed prisons across Turkey, aiming to relocate 2000 inmates to F type prisons. Hacer is now severely disfigured; her hair entirely burnt away. She was attacked with chemicals by Turkish security forces. 32 other inmates perished and 26 were killed by security forces. 6 others burnt themselves to death rather than be moved to a new jail.
