Thirty-one-year-old Maria Nemeth seemed to be in a loving relationship with 24-year-old Fidel Lopez in Sunrise, Florida, but one night in September 2015 changed everything forever. After a night of drinking tequila, Lopez became enraged and brutally killed and mutilated Nemeth inside their apartment; he later called 911 himself claiming she had trouble breathing. As investigators dug deeper, they discovered that what Lopez described as an “accidental” death was anything but, and he eventually pled guilty to first-degree murder and sexual battery in her disembowelment to avoid the death penalty. A disturbing cell phone video showed on-duty New Mexico sheriff’s deputies abusing a baby rabbit and engaging in threatening behavior, prompting a state police investigation after it surfaced on social media. One deputy came forward, alleging the incident was part of a broader pattern of misconduct involving weapons and intimidation that supervisors failed to stop.
