A man approached her vehicle, demanded she exit, and during the confrontation, she was fatally shot. The assailant then drove away in her car, which was later found abandoned about 40 miles away. Investigation and Arrest Investigators collected a cigarette butt from the recovered vehicle, which contained DNA matching Donald Smith, a man with a prior criminal record. Surveillance footage also showed a man purchasing the same brand of cigarettes near the crime scene. However, when confronted, Donald insisted he was not the person in the footage and revealed he had an identical twin brother, Ronald Smith. Further investigation, including fingerprint analysis, confirmed that Ronald's prints matched those found on the victim's car, while Donald's did not. Faced with this evidence, Ronald confessed to the crime, stating that the shooting was accidental during an attempted car theft. Legal Proceedings Ronald Smith was charged with multiple offenses, including felony murder, carjacking, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In October 2012, he was convicted on all counts and sentenced to life in prison plus 25 years.

In response, she retrieved a .38 caliber pistol from her bedside table and shot him twice, resulting in his death. She then called 911, reporting the incident as self-defense.​ During the investigation, Smithey admitted to law enforcement that she had inflicted some of her wounds herself, fearing disbelief regarding her self-defense claim. This admission, obtained after she had invoked her right to remain silent, was initially suppressed by the court. However, during her 2015 trial, her defense team introduced a 911 call and expert testimony, which opened the door for prosecutors to present the previously suppressed statements. Consequently, Smithey was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison.​ In December 2020, an appellate court overturned her conviction, citing ineffective assistance of counsel due to the strategic errors made by her defense team. Facing a retrial, Smithey entered a no-contest plea to second-degree murder in May 2021. She was resentenced to time served—approximately six and a half years—and placed on 10 years of probation. The plea deal was agreed upon by both the prosecution and Cline's family to avoid the trauma of a new trial

Lois Riess, dubbed the "Killer Grandma," is an American woman who committed two murders in 2018, leading to a nationwide manhunt and her eventual capture.​ Background Born in 1962 in Rochester, Minnesota, Lois Riess appeared to lead a typical life as a wife, mother of three, and grandmother. However, beneath this facade, she struggled with a severe gambling addiction and had a history of financial misconduct, including embezzling from her sister. Biography ​ The Murders On March 11, 2018, after a heated argument, Riess shot and killed her husband, David Riess, at their home in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. She then forged his signature to withdraw $11,000 from his bank account and fled the state. ​ Riess traveled to Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where she befriended 59-year-old Pamela Hutchinson, a woman who resembled her. On April 5, 2018, Riess murdered Hutchinson to assume her identity, stealing her ID, credit cards, and vehicle. She used these to continue her escape, traveling through several states. ​ Capture and Sentencing Riess was apprehended on April 19, 2018, in South Padre Island, Texas, after a tip from a restaurant employee who recognized her. She pleaded guilty to both murders and received two life sentences without the possibility of parole. She is currently incarcerated at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee.

Marie Fowler was tragically murdered on December 24, 2014, in Anderson County, South Carolina. She and her friend, James Dobson, offered a ride to John Villarreal, who was hitchhiking. After agreeing to drive him to the Georgia state line, Villarreal asked them to pull over, then shot both Fowler and Dobson in the head. He left them on the roadside and stole their vehicle. Fowler succumbed to her injuries later that day, while Dobson survived but suffered severe, life-altering injuries. ​Steven Mark Zelich, born on October 29, 1961, is a former West Allis, Wisconsin police officer who became known as the "Wisconsin Suitcase Murderer" after being convicted of murdering two women. Zelich met his victims, 19-year-old Jenny Gamez from Cottage Grove, Oregon, and 37-year-old Laura Simonson from Farmington, Minnesota, through sadomasochism (S&M) websites where he sought submissive partners. In August 2012, he killed Gamez during a sexual encounter in a Kenosha, Wisconsin hotel room. Similarly, in November 2013, he killed Simonson in a Rochester, Minnesota hotel. Zelich claimed both deaths were accidental during consensual "breath play." ​ After their deaths, Zelich concealed the women's bodies in suitcases, initially storing them in his home and car before eventually dumping them along a roadway in Geneva, Wisconsin. The suitcases were discovered by highway workers on June 5, 2014. Following his arrest on June 27, 2014, Zelich was charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. He pleaded guilty to first-degree reckless homicide for Gamez's death and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. For Simonson's death, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Minnesota and received a consecutive 25-year sentence. Additionally, he was sentenced to 10 years for hiding the corpses, bringing his total imprisonment to 70 years, effectively a life sentence.
