Just shy of midnight on July 4th, 2023, police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, received a flurry of panicked calls regarding a shooting on Andrews Avenue, a residential street full of families. When police arrived, they discovered a man, a tattoo artist and father of four, barely clinging to life after being shot behind the wheel of his vehicle. Surrounding him, making the scene even more heartbreaking, were his teenaged daughters. On December 18th, 2022, police in a city in New Mexico raced to a home on the west side after calls poured in reporting a shooting at a house party. An 18-year-old woman, who had been celebrating receiving a full scholarship to college for the coming year, was struck by a bullet that passed through three layers of wall. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically did not survive. Very quickly, partygoers, neighborhood cameras, and social media posts began piecing together what had happened. Four individuals—one of them a 16-year-old boy—had been kicked out of the party after being caught by the homeowner flashing firearms and taking photos and videos with them. A 16-year-old boy, who was walking down the sidewalk with a group of friends, including a 17-year-old male, was approached by a vehicle that pulled up alongside them. The occupants of the vehicle became involved in a verbal altercation with the 17-year-old male, which escalated into gunfire.
